Best Hiking Shoes For Travel

Harmony Lace by Hi-Tec

Going hiking but dreading taking your heavy hiking boots with you?  At Best Rated Reviews, we always aim to pack light.  We recently discovered a truly amazing pair of hiking shoes that we recommend as the “best of the best” for lightweight travel.

Harmony Lace by Hi-Tec is a pair of hiking shoes designed to function as a lightweight hiking boots without the bulk.  We tried them and found them to be some of the best hiking shoes we have ever tried.

Here’s why:

They are very comfortable for hiking shoes.  They are designed with just enough stiffness to give you the support you need while hiking.  Yet they are made of a comfortable, lightweight material.  Mesh allows your feet to breathe so they do not get as hot as they do in most hiking boots.

We also liked the design of the Harmony Lace.  They are stylish and their smoky brown/aloe color combination lends to professionalism.

These shoes also contain a moisture wicking lining and anti-odor, anti-microbial Ortholite sockliner.    Their durable Vibram rubber outsole gives added protection to your feet.

Harmony Lace Women’s Shoes Rating: 5 Stars!  Best!

Also, if you are looking for a well-built, affordable pair of sandals to complement your active travel wardrobe, we recommend Hi-Tec’s Waimea Falls.

These sandals are made with a durable rubber outsole and a sculpted footbed to provide sure-footing.  These are some of the most affordable sandals we have seen for the quality at $40 a pair.

Waimea Falls Women’s Sandals Rating: 3 Stars!  Good!

Recycled Coffee?! Do You Really Expect Us To Drink That?

I recently stopped into a gas station to get a cup of coffee while traveling along the Texas Coast.  I walked in and the coffee pot was empty. So I asked the attendant if he had any fresh coffee.  He said “No” and that he would be glad to make some.  Then he pulled out the already-brewed grounds in the coffee pot, saw they were full, pushed them back in, and let her drip.  “He can’t be serious!” I thought.  But he was.  I politely declined and headed down the road to find a fresher cup of coffee elsewhere! ~Keith

4th Burner Pot

If you want steamed asparagus, corn on the cob, or other steamed vegetables in a jiffy, we have a recommendation for you!  The 4th Burner Pot by Kuhn Rikon makes use of that ubiquitous fourth burner that is least used.  It is specifically designed to fit on your small burner.  We love the design.  It is excellent.  Unlike the average steaming pot, the narrow contour and tube-like shape thoroughly cooks long and slender items, such as asparagus, and keeps them beautiful at the same time.  Then, you can pour out the water using the pour spout without getting scalded.  This item is a must-have for any cook.

Long Airport Lines? Try This!

Long airport lines?  Try this! The Walkstool is a portable, lightweight stool with a comfortable contouring seat that makes long airport lines a pleasant experience!  Where you are, there you sit!

Last winter, we traveled to Israel via Newark.  In New Jersey, we were snowed in and sat in the jetway all night, for 6 hours, watching the snow pile up on the wings of the plane.  Then, we de-planed at 5 a.m. and had to stand in line for 5 hours to re-route our flight!  At the time, we just kept saying, “If only we had a stool!”

Since that time, we have found our stool: the Walkstool.  It is a must-have for any traveler of any age, whether in good health or not.  The bottom line?  Everyone gets tired while traveling, especially when you are waiting somewhere.  This is a must-have.  It comes with its own carry case.

Streamlight

Streamlight PT Series

Flashlights are not something we normally a topic of discussion. However, when you need one a good flashlight is as important as anything we own. For several years, as a Deputy Sheriff, I used a Streamlight “Stinger” on duty. Recently, I noticed the line of LED lights offered by Streamlight. The difference is amazing. My old “Stinger” is still great, however when you see the LED lights in a side by side comparison, you won’t believe your eyes.

The new technology will make you toss your old lights in the can. When it comes to size, they are smaller than ever. For your security, most of these lights offer a “strobe” feature that will blind anyone that you shine it at. You simply cannot look at that bright of a light and see the person holding it. The strobe feature alone could save your life by giving you precious seconds to get away from an attack.

I settled on the model “PT2L”  for my car. It is small enough for the glove compartment, or to slip into my pocket when we are out after dark. The rear push button has 3 functions that are all easily utilized.

I highly recommed that you visit your local “Streamlight” dealer and see these lights for yourself. You will be glad you did.

Camping, hiking, walking, touring…whatever makes you happy, you need a flashlight you can depend on.  We recommend the PT Series by Streamlight.  Once you’ve found Streamlight, you can’t go back!  These flashlights are ultra compact, perfect for both travel and leisure.  They are also a “must” for at-home use!

The PT lights are the brightest flashlights we have found, with an output of up to 180 lumens.  They also have an excellent safety feature: a strobe setting, which is ideal to use as a signaling device.  We use our Streamlights regularly. We recommend them as a Best Rated “Must Have”.

We have found it useful to invest in a variety of sizes, one for your luggage, one for your car, one for your purse, and one for your home.  Here are the lights we recommend and why we find them useful:

(Here is a description of each flashlight in the order they appear in the photo.)

PT 1L: A 2 oz. flashlight perfect to carry in your purse, carry-on luggage, or day pack. 110 Lumens. Batteries last 1 hour 45 minutes.

PT 2L: A 2.8 oz. flashlight we recommend as a compact flashlight for your home, to keep on your nightstand, as an emergency flashlight, or to clip on and use for around-the-house projects. 180 Lumens.  Batteries last 2 1/2 hours. Men’s preferred flashlight.

PT 2AA: A 3.4 oz. fflashlight perfect to carry in your suitcase, for camping or hiking, and everyday use.  120 Lumens.  Batteries last 1 hour 45 minutes. Women’s preferred flashlight.

PT 1 AA: A 2.3 oz. flashlight.  This flashlight is the least bright of the series.  50 Lumens.  Batteries last 1 hour 45 minutes.

You can find these great flashlights at www.Streamlight.com.

Hairy Carrots?!

Carrots From Walmart

First, we saw the moldy berries.  Then, we smelled the rancid lunch meat.  But when we saw the hairy carrots, we knew we had to write about it.  Welcome to a rare review on the “worst of the worst” by Best Of The Best.

We pride ourselves on highlighting the “best of the best”.  But when we find a company or product engaging in or tolerating the exact opposite of what we espouse, we report that, also.  Our reviewers brought these items home from the store and when they pulled them out, they were in this condition!

“Save money.  Live better,” Walmart’s current motto says.  While we agree that Walmart offers many products cheaper than its competitors, unfortunately we have found one area that their moniker does not ring true: the produce department.  Our reviewers have tried to give Walmart the benefit of the doubt, but to no avail, have been surprised to find their “fresh food” gone bad in a short amount of time.  This has happened to several of our reviewers several times, causing us to say “No, Thank You!” to Walmart fruit and produce.

“Hairy Carrots!”  The phrase could replace some of today’s common expletives.  Some of us have started using the term.  And it’s working for us.

We appreciate the overall idea that one can “Save money. Live better,” shopping at Walmart.  But we really hope they will improve their quality  check before they corrode consumer trust, like they did ours in the produce department.
